Based on Behavioural Activation, a core CBT technique

Diagram illustrating the cycle of depression and activity. On the left, blue circles depict the vicious cycle of depression with steps: feeling low or irritable, doing less out of life, and stopping doing things that matter. On the right, yellow circles depict the positive cycle of activity with steps: feeling better, getting more out of life, and doing more of what matters. An arrow labeled 'Behavioral Activation' points from the depression cycle to the activity cycle.

Behavioural Activation (BA) is a CBT-based therapy for depression, recommended by NICE, that breaks the cycle of low mood by helping people gradually increase engagement in rewarding, meaningful activities they've stopped doing, even without motivation ("action before motivation"). It's a structured, goal-focused technique involving identifying enjoyable activities, scheduling them, and tracking progress, often using workbooks and delivered by NHS practitioners to improve mood and energy.

Brief BA is a shorter version of BA, adapted to support young people in a shorter timeframe.

Discover your values

A young man with curly hair wearing a lavender hoodie and gray headphones around his neck is sitting on a gray sofa, looking at his smartphone, in a bright living room with a large plant and a framed picture on the wall.

“I think it's quite a nice idea on how to get someone up and moving especially when you're very low and you don't want to do anything. Like I've been in that boat before, you just want to stay in bed, you can't get up, you can't do certain things but if you're kind intrigued in this story and you just want to see it progress like it'll give you some motivation to get up when sometimes people have no motivation to get up.”
